Sheriff Sam Jones describes his brush with death during the Bleeding Kansas strife as settlers grapple with the question of whether Kansas would be admitted to the Union as a free or slave state when the Kansas Nebraska Act states that a vote of the people will make that determination.

About the Author

Bahnmaier serves as President of the Lecompton Historical Society. He plays the part of Sheriff Sam Jones in plays performed by the Lecompton Reenactors which brings to life the characters of John Brown, Jim Lane, Andrew Reeder, Clarina Nichols, Charles and Sara Robinson, Sen.
