Meet the colorful and forceful Lyda Conley who was the first woman Native American lawyer, and the first Native American woman to argue before the Supreme Court of the United States. Conley was a Wyandot Indian who protected the sacred ground of the Huron Cemetery which still is located in downtown Kansas City, KS.

About the Author

Joyce Slater


Joyce is an actress and professional storyteller with a BSE in Art Education. She was born and raised in Kansas City, MO and began her professional career as a high school art teacher. In 1989, Conley began storytelling and has developed and coordinated nationally recognized storytelling events. She is a member of the board of the National Storytelling Network and a teacher at the Coterie Theater in Kansas City

Relive the adventures of a young woman caught up in the tragedy of Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, KS in August of 1863. She was so moved that she decided to pass as a man in order to fight for the Union cause.

About the Author

Melva Hargett

Melva Hargett has been a free-lance storyteller for over 15 years. She tells folk tales from many different countries. She has stories for every age and every occasion. She likes to tell stories that make you laugh, make you shiver, and make you think.

Melva grew up on a farm in southwest Kansas. She knows all about crazy chickens and driving a combine during wheat harvest. She plays piano part-time in music classes at an early education center. She knows more verses of "The Wheels on the Bus" than a grown woman has any business knowing.

Hargett lives in Shawnee Mission, KS. She holds a BS in Biology from Fort Hays State University. As a free-lance storyteller, Hargett delights in spinning folk tales from many cultures and telling ghost stories. She is a member of the River and Prairie Storyweavers and Missouri Storytelling.

Dawn Downey is a freelance writer from Kansas City, MO. Her essays have been published by Alzheimer's Anthology of Unconditional Love, Kansas City Voices Magazine, The Best Times, The Concordia (KS) Blade-Empire and The Topeka (KS) Metro News. Her work earned first prize for non-fiction at the 2005 Santa Barbara Writers Conference; and also first and second prize for personal essays in the Missouri Writers Guild 2007 Winter Writing contest. She belongs to the Missouri Writers Guild.
